Gym - Origins and Other Vital Facts
Not too many exercisers out there may know that the term "gymnasium" or "gym" has its origins in Ancient Greece, where the young were subjected to rigorous physical and intellectual training. Interestingly, gymnasium is a Greek word that refers to a "place to be naked" where bathing and studying are done at the same time. Greeks were very much conscious of the importance of cognitive learning, and many Greek gyms were equipped with books, which are mainly used during relaxation after bathing.
Today, gym remains a place for physical learning and training, but not necessarily for bathing and getting naked. For many people, visiting such establishments is as vital as performing exercise itself. However, not all gyms are commercialised, as there are those installed or built inside private homes.
As for home gyms, there are three basic types: machine, free weight, and plate-loaded. Each kind has its own share of pros and cons, which should help you in deciding which to buy. Machine home gyms are built from a single steel frame. Connected to the frame are different kinds of fitness equipment to work out various body parts. Free weight home gyms feature several individual pieces of equipment that are not attached together. Weights are added, dropped and adjusted manually, depending on your exercise goal or physical ability. Plate-loaded home gyms, on the other hand, blend the basic elements of free weight and machine home gyms. It may have a couple of stations, but allows you to add or subtract weights manually.
In as much as you need to carefully choose a commercial gym, properly choose which home gym to own. Your goal and budget will most likely lead you to the one that suits you best.
